Summer School Programs - Summer 2008

At Federal Way Public Schools, we’re committed to helping all children succeed in meeting the state’s graduation requirements, including the WASL.

A variety of free programs are available during the summer months to help students develop the skills needed to pass the WASL and to succeed in the training programs, colleges and jobs they enter after high school.

The district has fee-based summer school options for secondary students who want to take electives or advanced classes during the summer, or who need to make up credits in classes other than math and reading.  Students who successfully complete credit retrieval classes over the summer break may be able to stay on target for graduation

Traditional Summer School

Summer school offers classes in Language Arts, Math, Science and History. Classes are designed to allow students to make up credits or improve their understanding of a special subject. Students will also work on reading, organization and study skills. Most classes cost $190, and are held at Sacajawea Middle School, 1101 S. Dash Point Road, from June 19th through July 1st. Classes are held from 8:05 – 10 a.m., and 10:05 a.m. to noon. Students can register in person in the cafeteria at Sacajawea on Tuesday, June 17, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., or by mail. Mail-in registration must be received by June 10, 2008. More information is available at http://www.fwps.org/info/summerschool/ and brochures are in all FWPS secondary schools’ offices

Internet Academy Summer School

Federal Way Public Schools Internet Academy has a variety of regular core and elective classes in addition to our credit retrieval classes to help secondary students pass classes needed for graduation. By enrolling in IA classes, students and their family have added flexibility in making their summer plans: Students can complete the work literally anywhere they can take a computer. The summer school session is June 30 - August 8, and registration can be completed online from June 2- 26. There is a nonrefundable tuition fee of $180 per class.  The IA summer schedule is available at http://www.iacademy.org/summer.

No-Cost Summer Programs

Federal Way Public Schools provides free summer school to students who need additional time or instruction to master the skills needed to pass the WASL, or to meet the district’s grade level expectations.

Tenth and 11th grade students who haven’t yet passed the reading or math sections of the WASL may participate in the Summer PAS (Promoting Academic Success) Program.

The district will invite students to participate in this program free of charge if their Spring 2008 WASL scores qualify them for the program. Summer PAS will be held from June 30 to August 7, Monday-Thursday, at Federal Way High School. Morning, afternoon and evening sessions are available. The goal is to prepare students to pass the WASL in August, 2008. Students who successfully complete the PAS program will be eligible to receive an elective credit. Invitations will be offered to students who qualify for this program.

Kindergarten through 8th grade students may participate in the Summer Bridge Program.

For the fifth consecutive summer, the Summer Bridge program is being provided with generous funding from the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce / Community in Schools of Federal Way.

  • Summer Bridge for Kindergarten through 5th grade students will be held from 8 -11:45 a.m., Monday – Thursday, June 23rd – July 31st. Nine sites will serve the district: Adelaide, Meredith Hill, Silver Lake, Mark Twain, Mirror Lake, Olympic View, Sunnycrest, Star Lake, and Wildwood Elementary Schools. Students will be picked up at their regular bus stops.
  • Summer Bridge for middle school students (grades 6-8) will be held from 9:15 a.m. – 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 23 -July 31, 2008.

Summer Bridge for middle school students will be held at:

  • Sacajawea (Sacajawea students)
  • Totem (Totem students)

Parents of students who qualify for the Summer Bridge program will receive an invitation from their school.
