What is Special About Our School?
Kilo is located on the east side of I-5 nestled in a large wooded area next door to Lake Dolloff Elementary. The surrounding neighborhoods are a combination of suburban housing developments, apartment complexes, and rural family homes. Our student body is a rich multi-cultural community. Throughout the school, high standards and excellence are the expectations for staff and students. Our mission is represented by the five points of the Cougar Star and programs and activities are aligned to our mission
- Ensuring high Academic Achievement for all students
- Being Culturally Responsive
- Providing opportunities for Exploration
- Building strong Relationships with students and families
- Creating a Safe and Civil Learning Environment
Each student is expected to make at least one year of academic growth for one year spent in classes at Kilo. A three-tiered academic approach to learning is in the process of being implemented to ensure all students meet or exceed standard. Reading Support classes have been created for students who need more instruction in reading strategies.
This program combined with the Language Arts program, have created a powerful instructional model for all students. Last year Algebraic Thinking was added to the mathematics course offerings. This math class is taught in a block and provides extended instructional time for students who need additional support in math. Geometry, Algebra and Pre-Algebra continue to be the basic mathematics programs. An inquiry based hands-on approach to science is used in all science classrooms. PE classes are now year long for all students. Building relationships with our students is very important to the staff at Kilo and so an Advisory class is offered twice a week. During this time lessons in organization, time management goal setting and school success are taught.
It is because of these opportunities that Kilo is a great place for kids!
No Child Left Behind Report Card
The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s web site makes this information available on-line at http://reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us/ Click on Federal Way in the “Summary” box, then choose your school from the list. You may also request a paper copy of the report card at your school’s office. For more information about the NCLB Act, go to http://www.nclb.gov/index.html.
