What is Special About Our School?
The Camelot of old is alive and well at Camelot Elementary. Children are able to “shine” and be recognized positively within the Camelot family. The hallways and classrooms display samples of their work while adults and children alike greet each other warmly. Most of the students walk to and from school providing them an opportunity to greet one another before they are on the campus. The sword in the stone placed at the entry, which also has beautifully engraved doors, represents the Camelot theme. The hallways and the rooms have names like “The Tower”, “Roundtable”, and “Knights Lanes.”
The Camelot family of almost 300 children has a very diverse background both ethnically and socio-economically. Children offer their peers help and enjoy getting “caught doing something good”, while their parents and the community enjoy tutoring and coordinating other activities for students and their parents. All events support the theme that all children can succeed. Camelot kids and their families enjoy events like Reading Aloud, Math Night, skating together, movies, meals and games. The Camelot family enjoys time together learning and having fun.
In both 1997 and 2005 Camelot has received the National distinction of Blue Ribbon School. No other school in the country has received this high honor twice. There were only 3 other schools in Washington that received this award in 2005. Camelot was chosen for its high academic success despite the diverse ethnicity and socio-economic status.
There is a quote that you will hear often at Camelot: “You must reach a child to teach a child.” The staff at Camelot has made a commitment to build relationships with students and families. This allows an environment of “trust” and allows teachers to really know the individual needs of each child. No Child Left Behind Report Card
The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Web site makes this information available on-line. For more information about the NCLB Act, go to http://www.nclb.gov/index.html. For a hard copy of your Federal Way Public Schools’ district or school report card, please request one from your child’s school.
