What is Special About Our School?
Brigadoon is a neighborhood all-walking school. Our building-wide theme of “On Track with Reading” encourages students in Kindergarten through 5th grade to participate in our Accelerated Reader program. They earn points for reading books at increasing levels of difficulty and take electronic tests related to their reading. Students are recognized for their levels of achievement. Students may participate in AR Club and many challenge each other in Battle of the Books.
Primary and intermediate classes team up as Reading Buddies to regularly read together. Our classroom volunteers are an additional support to students as they listen attentively while students read aloud. These practices allow children to apply skills learned during classroom instruction. Brigadoon students, staff and parents love to read.
Brigadoon is excited to have a diverse population. Our students speak a variety of languages and have roots in many different countries. This diversity enlivens our student body and enriches our understanding of the world around us.
Brigadoon students in grades 2nd through 5th use Accelerated Math. This program focuses on computational skills and enables teachers to spend more time working with children individually, to strengthen their math skills.
Brigadoon is proud of our superb student and academic programs that include our community preschool, all-day Kindergarten, before- and after-school math programs, a multiage GATE class for grades 3 through 5, and our spring track program. We are also proud of our PTA, our classroom volunteers, an exciting music program, a self-manager’s program or Tiger Club also serves as our student government, AR Club, and our extensive library. We host a school-age on-site daycare program through Rainbow Connection.
The Brigadoon staff considers all aspects of a child’s development. We know that students make greater progress when the school, the parents, and the students work together toward a common goal. Student-led conferences help cement this partnership. Though we grow and change, Brigadoon remains committed to the children of this community.
No Child Left Behind Report Card
The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s web site makes this information available on-line. Find your school’s report card on-line at http://reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us/, Click on Federal Way in the “Summary” box, then choose your school from the list. You may also request a paper copy of the report card at your school’s office. For more information about the NCLB Act, go to http://www.nclb.gov/index.html.
