TBHS Street Law Class Sponsors Program on Students’ Legal, Constitutional Rights

What constitutional rights do students have in school, particularly in the areas of free speech, religion, search and seizure, and due process?  How do these correspond to civil liberties and rights of citizens in general?

Students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the public are invited to a public forum sponsored by the Todd Beamer High School Street Law class beginning at 10 a.m., October 17, 2009.

A panel including Washington State Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders, ACLU Staff Attorney Rose Spidell, and school district attorney Lynette Baisch will share insights into the subjects. A presentation by students will precede the panel discussion.

The forum will be filmed for re-broadcast on TVW.  This is the second public forum conducted by the Street Law class. On Saturday, September 19, a public viewing of the classic movie, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” was followed by a discussion comparing the movie to current events and to Federalist Papers #9 and #10, which are being studied in class.

Todd Beamer High School’s Street Law Class is funded through a grant from the Washington State Bar Association's Council on Public Legal Education, the Washington Judges Foundation and in partnership with Judge Dave Larson of the Federal Way Municipal Court.   For more information, please call (253) 945-2871.

Todd Beamer High School is located at 35999 16th Avenue South, Federal Way, WA 98003.
