Free PSAT testing for 9th & 11th Grade FWPS Students on Oct. 14

On Wednesday, Oct. 14th, Federal Way Public Schools’ 9th and 11th grade students will take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test free of charge.  

The PSAT/NMSQT measures students’ skills in critical reading, math problem-solving skills and writing.  Students and their parents sometimes don’t understand the value of taking yet another test, and may be reluctant to pay the $13 fee to take it, particularly in tough economic times such as these. 

However, there are very good reasons for students to take the test. Students can qualify for activities such as National Youth Leadership and Telluride Association camps based on their test scores; juniors can also qualify for NMSC scholarship programs. Other benefits in taking the test include:

  • Feedback on strengths and weaknesses in skills necessary for college study. Students can then focus their preparation on areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
  • Access to college and career planning tools that NMSC offers.
  • General information on how a student’s results compare to others nationwide applying to college.
  • Practice for the SAT. Students can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions they will see on the SAT.
  • Registration for information from colleges, if the students chooses.

For many of those reasons, the district has paid for the standardized test for 9th grade students for the past five years. This year, the district will pay for 11th grade students, as well, specifically to provides firsthand practice for the SAT® and allow them to qualify for National Merit Scholar awards.   Parents are asked to make sure students get plenty of rest the night before the test and are in school, ready to do their best on the test.
