School Leadership Teams - 2010
Philosophy:
The Board believes ensuring that every student will learn and become a successful participant in society is the shared responsibility of the school, the family, and the community. To this end, the Board expects each school to establish a School Leadership Team to provide opportunities for cooperation and collaboration among school staff, parents/guardians, community members, and, in secondary schools, students, in decisions related to improved student learning.
School Leadership Team Responsibility:
The focus of the School Leadership Team shall be the continuous improvement of student learning. Each School Leadership Team shall develop, monitor and evaluate a School Learning Plan that:
- guides the school's work to become a place that teaches to high standards,
- ensures high quality instruction,
- demands serious work and high performance from students and teachers alike,
- continually searches for better teaching methods,
- unites the efforts of all adults,
- gains parents' confidence, and
- uses parental support to motivate student work.
The SLT shall prepare and submit to the Superintendent and Board of Directors a report that will include the learning plan, SLT charter, and other information as described in procedures, when requested by the Board.
The SLT shall develop and, as needed, revise a written charter as described in the Responsibility section in procedures.
School Leadership Team Membership:
School Leadership Teams shall be composed of a balanced representation of stakeholders of the school and shall reflect the diversity found within the school and community.
Stakeholders include parents, building administrator(s), certificated staff,
classified staff, community member(s), and where appropriate, students. Each
member shall have equal status as a participant on the SLT. It is strongly
recommended that no one particular stakeholder group constitute a majority
of the SLT.
Roles:
The principal determines the learning plan goals and shares decision-making responsibilities with staff and the School Leadership Team as appropriate, yet as the primary leader of the school, remains legally responsible for the building and its program. The support and leadership of the principal are critical to the success of the School Leadership Team. The principal and staff are responsible to ensure that school, district and state goals as identified in the Learning Plan are reached. The SLT shall establish avenues to communicate to all stakeholder groups the issues addressed and decisions made at its regular meetings.
School Leadership Team Parameters:
School Leadership Teams shall operate within the requirements and guidelines of district employee agreements, district policies and procedures, and state and federal laws, unless waivers from any such requirements are requested and approved by the appropriate entities.
The Superintendent/designee is charged with the responsibility of developing procedures for the implementation of this policy.
