What's Happening In Federal Way Schools?

• Olympic View Elementary School (now a Level One Green School) recently prepared and presented a Recycling Musical for parents and staff. 

• Adelaide Elementary School just began their composting program and in one lunch period reduced their garbage from seven cans (32 gallon sized) to three cans per day.  This is a reduction of 800 cans of garbage a year.

• Nautilus Elementary hosts an annual Redondo Creek cleanup learning great information about the environment and demonstrating environmental stewardship as well.  Last year Ms. Torre's class cleaned up 1,320 pounds of garbage.

• This year Rainier View Elementary held their 2nd annual metal recycling event to assist in community cleanup and as raised $4,200 for their school.

• Todd Beamer and Saghalie students recently participated in an event with the City of Federal Way and Lakehaven Utility District on the proper methods of disposing cooking oil.

• Nautilus Elementary reached Level 3 in the King County Green Schools program this year by concentrating on water usage and conservation.

• Green Gables hosts "Waste Free Wednesdays" encouraging students to bring their lunch in reusable containers.  Students share daily conservation tips with all staff and students via morning announcements.

In Federal Way Public Schools, students and staff are striving to create a healthier environment in their schools and community, for today and tomorrow.  

Students, teachers and staff are making a difference in our schools and community with programs designed to recycle, reduce waste, save energy and conserve resources.  Besides the long-range benefits of good environmental stewardship, we strive to provide a healthy environment that supports student learning and employee productivity.  King County Green Schools – a King County Waste Management Division program supporting schools' efforts to be environmentally responsible -- also provides teaching and learning opportunities for students and staff, developing environmental awareness that will last a lifetime.

In 1995, Federal Way became the 2nd school district in the state to establish the position of Resource Conservation Manager. Over the past 20 years, the district has continued to spearhead conservation efforts to recycle, reduce waste, save energy and conserve water.  

The district received a Green Schools Certificate of Recognition in 2006 -- for leading the district to reach and exceed goals in waste reduction and recycling, energy conservation, environmental purchasing and environmental education -- from the City of Federal Way and the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks.  In 2007, our district earned the Green Glove Leader in Sustainable School Award from King County.

In 2012, Camelot Elementary School was awarded one of the US Department of Education's first-ever Green Ribbon School awards which nationally recognizes schools that excel in the areas of environmental impact and energy efficiency, healthy school environments and environmental and sustainability education.  Only five schools in the state of Washington and 78 nationwide were awarded this honor.
