Preparing for an Emergency

What are we doing to prepare for emergencies – including acts of terrorism or war?

Each school has a building emergency plan in place, and that plan includes procedures on responding to incidents like fires, earthquakes, or intruders. We have regular drills during the school year to prepare for these types of incidents.

Over and above that, the district has an All Hazard Plan and a District Emergency Command Center (ECC) plan to coordinate response activities across the district.

Over the past few months, we’ve been working with our local fire and law enforcement agencies and community and county emergency management teams to be prepared for the threats facing our nation today.

A senior administrator from the school district attends meetings of the Greater Federal Way Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to facilitate communication between the district and local/regional emergency management agencies. We continue to update our plans on procedures to follow in an emergency.

One of the areas that our emergency team has spent time reviewing and updating recently is the Shelter-In-Place procedure, which is very much like our school lockdown procedure.
