The Writing Process
The five steps of the writing process, as taught in the Federal Way School District, are:

Key:
The pupil works to organize ideas. (drafting)
The pupil rereads the piece, re-wording ideas to clarify meaning and "spice up" the writing. (revising)
The pupil repairs faulty mechanics to make the piece error free. (editing)

- Decide on a topic.
The pupil was asked to describe the snow and ice storm that had occurred earlier in the year.
- Brainstorm ideas related to the topic.
The writer used a list and his five senses to write ideas describing the snowy day.
- Use a graphic organizer to organize ideas.
- Choose the ideas that will most strongly support the topic.
The writer crossed out the ideas he did not plan to include.

- Write your ideas in an organized way. (paragraphs, bullets, or chart)

- Correct parts that don't make sense or aren't in logical order.
This was a sentence fragment, so he added, "It's wonderful..."
- Add powerful language, figurative language, detail, description.
The writer added descriptive words to create a clearer picture in the reader's mind.
- Vary sentence beginnings and structure.
The pupil rewrote his topic sentence when he realized it was too much like his closing sentence.
The writer begins to move away from always starting with "I".
- Strengthen voice to show the person behind the words.
