The Writing Process
The five steps of the writing process, as taught in the Federal Way Public Schools, are:

Key:
The pupil works to organize ideas. (drafting)
The pupil rereads the piece, re-wording ideas to clarify meaning and to "spice up" the writing. (revising)

- Decide on a topic.
- Brainstorm ideas related to the topic.
The writer used his five senses to make a list describing the beach.
- Use a graphic organizer to organize ideas.
- Choose the ideas that will most strongly support the topic.
- Write your ideas in an organized way. (paragraphs, bullets, or chart)
- Correct parts that don't make sense or aren't in logical order.
- Add powerful language, figurative language, detail, description.
The writer added adjectives to more clearly describe his topic, the beach.
- Vary sentence beginnings and structure.
The writer varied sentence beginnings by substituting other words for "The."
- Strengthen voice to show the person behind the words.
- Correct mechanical errors.
