1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform, and to respond effectively to the arts. To meet this standard the student will:
1.1 Play music graded on the 3 - 4 level
1.2 Sight read music on the 2 ½ - 3 1/2 level
1.3 Play two octave Major Scales D, G, C, F, Bb, and minor scales d, g, a
1.4 Play music containing syncopation and ties across the bar line
1.5 Play with musical expression
1.6 Perform dynamics and tempo changes as indicated
1.7 Understand internal communication in ensemble playing
1.8 Demonstrate the use of vibrato on their instrument
2. The student demonstrates thinking skills using artistic processes. To meet this standard the student will:
2.1 Evaluate musical performances
2.2Devise strategies to improve musical performances
2.3 Accurately tune his/her instrument
2.4 Recognize proper intonation and demonstrate the ability to play in tune
2.5 Demonstrate the ability to efficiently manage personal practice time
3. The student uses at least one of the art forms to communicate ideas and feelings. To meet this standard the student will:
3.1 Demonstrate musical artistry to communicate ideas and emotions through musical performance
3.2 Demonstrate the ability to play varied styles of music through participation in a solo or ensemble
3.3 Compose a simple melody for their instrument using traditional western notation including dynamic and tempo markings
3.4 Demonstrate musical knowledge through writing
4. The student understands how the arts connect to other subject areas, life and work. To meet this standard the student will:
4.1 Demonstrate stage presence, correct posture, etiquette and the ability to follow the director during performance
4.2 Discuss the appreciation of orchestral and chamber music and develop personal preferences
4.3 Demonstrate the ability to work independently and responsibly by playing a solo or in an ensemble
4.4 Participate in planning and preparing music for school related events
4.5 Demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a group
