Grade 1 Lesson Plan - Math
Written by Joyce Baker & Jill Burnes
Outcome:
Students will be able to estimate.
Objectives: (EALR 1)
The student will estimate fractional parts of a whole.
Materials
1. For the lesson
- 1. Have shaded rectangles that shade 1/4; 1/3; 1/2; 2/3; 3/4; 4/4; 3/3; 2/2 to use as visual aids for your students. i.e. with 1/2 shaded
- 2. Addison-Wesley Mathematics Book; Lesson 12-12; pages 385A through 386A
These items are to be available for each PAIR of students:
- 3. Set of fraction circles
- 4. Paper circle the same size as the fraction circle
- 5. Pencil and paper
- 6. Clear plastic glass
- 7. A set of 5 strips of paper to go around the glass that cover up 1/4; 1/3; 1/2; 2/3; 3/4 of the glass. Label these strips with the amount they cover
- 8. Small paper rectangles to go inside the glass on which students will write
2. For the Enrichment:
These items are to be available for each PAIR of students:
- 1. 6 paper plates
- 2. 7 colored paper squares
- 3. A number cube is 1/4;1/3;/1/2;1/4;1/3;1/2
- 4. Applies information gained from reading to give a response
- 5. 1 pair of scissors
3. For the Accelerate the Learning:
- 1. Reteaching Skill Review 12-12 found in the Teacher's Support Package Reteaching Supplements
- 2. Practice Skills Maintenance 12-12 found in the Teacher's Support Package Practice Supplements
4. For the Homework:
- 1. Building Thinking Skills: Number Sense 12-12 in the Teacher's Support Practice Building Thinking Skills

Procedure
1. Opening Activity: (~ 10 minutes)
- 1. Divide the students into pairs. Give each pair a set of fraction circles and a paper circle the same size as the fraction circle.
- 2. The first student places one piece of a fraction circle on the whole paper circle
- 3. The second student says what fraction of the circle is covered and what fraction is uncovered. Students then work together to write the fractions
- 4. Students check their work with the fraction circle pieces, then switch roles and start again
2. Guided Practice: (~15 minutes)
- 1. Lead a discussion with the students on how they can use a fraction to tell how full or empty a jar is
- 2. Guide students through the four exercises on page 385 and page 386. (Can expand to ask how much is empty.)
3. Independent Practice: (~10 minutes)
- 1. Give each pair of students one glass with the ten paper rectangles and one set of labeled strips
- 2. The first student selects a paper strip and holds it around the bottom of the glass so that the second student cannot read the fraction written on the back. Students imagine that the paper represents milk poured into the glass. The first student asks how full the glass is.
- 3. The second student answers by saying and writing a fraction
- 4. Students check the answer on the back of the paper strip. They then switch roles and start again
4. Enrichment:
- 1. Give each pair of students 6 paper plates; 7 colored paper squares; the number cube and scissors
- 2. Each student takes 3 paper plates and labels one /4/; one 1/3 and one 1/2. They put a paper square on each plate. They keep 1 paper square nearby for a reminder of the size of the whole.
- 3. The first student rolls the number cube, estimates and cuts the fraction rolled from the piece of paper on the appropriate plate.
- 4. The second student takes a turn. Students continue until one of them empties ALL of his/her plates. If a student rolls a fraction that is more than what is left on the plate, then the remaining piece of paper can be removed from the plate.
5. Acceleration of Learning:
- 1. Students do the listed worksheet independently.
Close and Assess: (10 minutes)
- 1. Have students take out their Math Journal.
- 2. Student draw three containers, then shade one to represent 1/4 full; one to represent 1/3 full and one to represent 1/2 full.
- 3. Student is to write the fraction for each container and have them write WHY they chose their fraction. [i.e. I labeled 1/3 because if I put 1/2 into the glass, it would still have space].
Homework:
- 1. Pass out the Building Thinking Skills worksheet, to be collected the next day.
