Second Grade Learning Expectations

Essential Learning 1: The student writes clearly and effectively.

Writing Skill 1.3: Uses interesting words to describe.

Definition of Writing Skill:

Student shows an increased use of descriptive words (adjectives, adverbs, less common nouns and verbs).

Strategies:

  • Students are given a sentence or story with no descriptive language. The students brainstorm a list of words that would make the story or sentence more descriptive.
  • Students brainstorm word lists of "Juicy Words" or exciting words for them to refer to during writing.
  • During shared reading, read alouds, book groups, basal reading, the teacher points out or has students point out any "juicy" words.
  • Discuss the words from the story that students think helped them visualize the story most clearly.
